Sarah Grace had her first birthday today! We had intended to celebrate on Saturday, but it turned out that Dave had the afternoon off work. So, we ran to the store, got a cake and some supplies, and the partying commenced.
Her first dips into the cake were quite dainty. She dipped one index finger into the cake and tasted the icing . . . pretty good, maybe worth a second dip . . . before we knew it, she was eating cake by the handful and was so focused on her cake that we couldn't get her to look up for pictures. She took her cake-eating duties very seriously.
Finally, while she was playing with Dave, she reached to the sky and her arms came down swiftly and forcefully . . . landing right in the cake. You could almost see the light-bulb hovering above her head as she looked intently at the remaining glob of cake. Then she dug in with both hands, dredging up the bottom of the cake and offering it to whomever would take a handful of the soggy, black mulch (Note to self: chocolate cake makes daughter look like the Bearded Lady).
After the cake demolition, we sang Happy Birthday and Sarah "blew out" the big birthday candle that Dave had when he was a little boy. She didn't quite understand the singing, but liked it anyway. Andrew sang Happy Birthday to himself and was perfectly content to think it was his party, too (ah, the amazing power of cake . . . ). We had a great time. Happy Birthday, Sarah!
